Airport jobs can be some of the most profitable fares for private hire drivers, but they can also be an easy way to pick up an unexpected airport fine or Penalty Charge Notice (PCN).

UK airports often have strict rules around drop-off zones, pick-up areas, waiting and stopping. Many also use ANPR cameras to monitor vehicles that enter those zones, which means a missed payment or stopping in the wrong place can quickly turn into an airport parking PCN.

1. Set Up AutoPay wherever it's available

One of the easiest ways to avoid an airport drop-off PCN is to register for AutoPay wherever the airport offers it.

Many UK airports charge drivers for using terminal drop-off zones, and some require the charge to be paid online within a specific timeframe after your visit.

If you forget to pay, you could receive a parking fine - this will include drop-off charges and pick-up charges.

3. Don’t enter the pick-up area until your passenger is ready

Where possible, avoid entering an airport pick-up zone until your passenger confirms that they've collected their luggage and are heading to the designated collection point.

Airport pick-up and parking areas often charge based on how long you stay.

Arriving too early could therefore increase your costs, and overstaying could potentially lead to an airport parking charge.

If your passenger isn't ready, use the airport's designated waiting or holding area where one is available. Some airports have some free parking areas - so check these out before you accept the trip.

Avoid repeatedly entering the collection zone or driving around the terminal while you wait, as this may result in additional charges.

4. Follow airport signs - not just your sat nav

Navigation apps are helpful, but they aren't always up to date with airport traffic management systems.

Temporary road closures, new one-way systems and relocated pick-up points happen regularly. 

Always pay attention to official airport signs and road markings, particularly when approaching terminal roads, drop-off areas and private hire collection points.

5. Never stop in restricted areas
