The new MG4 vs MG5: which EV works for you?

news-open-image

There are two brand-new MG models for Otto Car drivers to choose between. Here’s how they compare.

Picking the right PCO car can feel complicated. After all, this is your everyday place of work and a big investment in your own future. Among the most popular brands at the moment is MG because it delivers such amazing value for money to the hard-working Uber driver.

This is why Otto Car is delighted to offer both of its newest models: the MG4 and MG5. These names might sound similar but the actual cars are completely different.

For PCO drivers, it’s obvious that the Long Range battery is the most suitable option but Otto Car now also offers the MG4 in a choice of two spec levels: SE or Trophy. This blogpost will clearly explain what each version provides so that you can then make the decision that’s right for you.

What’s the difference between the MG4 and MG5?

In simple terms, the MG5 is an estate car with a huge boot that is all about comfort and practicality. By contrast, the MG4 is a hatchback with a shorter and sportier shape that looks great and is fun to drive around town. The MG5 has more legroom for riders but both models currently qualify for Uber Comfort.

Why does the MG5 cost more than the MG4 if the range is lower?

Otto Car has chosen to offer the Long Range versions of both MG cars. The MG4 drives further than the MG5 model per charge because the car is shorter overall and it therefore weighs less overall. The MG4 also has newer battery tech and all of these points put together help to explain why its range is longer.

What are the differences between the SE and Trophy versions?

The standard (SE) spec keeps the MG4 at an attractive price but this car still feels impressive overall. With either model, the luxury (Trophy) spec provides nice extras, such as an electrically adjustable seat for the driver as well as heated front-seats and 360° parking cameras. For the MG4 Trophy, there are even more bonuses, such as lane-change assist, blind-spot detection and a wireless phone charge-pad.

Why does the MG4 Trophy have a shorter range than the MG4 SE?

The two spec-levels look almost exactly the same except the Trophy adds a distinctive rear-spoiler which helps to keep the car better grounded at high speeds. The reason why the Trophy version has a slightly lower range (roughly 4%) than the SE is because of the aerodynamics on this tailgate spoiler.

Which version of these new cars have leather seats?

The Trophy version of the MG4 and MG5 both have factory-fitted leatherette seats, whereas the SE comes with fabric seats. However, as with every new car, Otto Car provides free leatherette seat-covers for our drivers. These are custom-made and typically fitted a few weeks after the car is first available.

Does the new MG5 have a bigger boot than the MG4?

Yes. The MG5 is an estate car, which means its boot is roughly one-third larger than the MG4 at 479 litres – and this is only up to the luggage cover. If you fill it to the ceiling, you can squeeze in even more.

The MG4 has a good amount of space for Uber driving and the folding rear-seats are split. A false floor in the boot of the Trophy spec version of either model makes it easy to stash the charging cable away.

Which is better to drive: the MG4 or MG5?

This is a personal choice. Drivers who enjoy a responsive car will find the MG4 provides more grip and slightly less body-roll around corners. Those who value a more relaxing ride – with maximum room for Uber passengers and their bags – will love the new-shape MG5. The Trophy spec makes it even more comfortable.

Is the MG4 better than the MG5 for Uber driving?

It depends on the way you work. The MG5 has a huge boot, which is great for airport runs or a family. Its softer springs soak up bumps in the road and this helps you to work longer hours as you are less tired. The shorter length of the MG4 is ideal for nipping through traffic or parking. Its angular styling and two-tone bodywork look more sporty than the MG5 or, indeed, VW ID.3 – and the price is lower too.
