Otto drivers support Brazil to win the World Cup
To celebrate the diversity of the Otto family, we asked all of our drivers which team they want to win the World Cup, because so many of you are from different countries. Brazil came top with 39% of votes. To find out why, we met a Brazilian Otto driver, Leandro.
So Leandro, are you originally from Brazil?
Yes. I’m from São Carlos, which is in the south of Brazil. It’s only a small place and it’s around 200 km from São Paulo, which is a massive city of more than 12 million people.
Wow. That makes even London seem small.
São Paulo is a lot of stress compared to London. For one thing, South America is a little bit dangerous anyway. But in São Paulo, the drivers don’t even stop at red lights. It’s crazy.
That’s funny, because people think that in Brazil everyone is relaxed
It’s completely different. In tropical countries, even the working week is strange. Everyone stops work at 1200 on Friday and goes to the beach until Monday. It’s nice sunshine, nice beaches – and great caipirinhas.
Can you explain to the other drivers what a caipirinha is?
It’s a cocktail. You make it with a Brazilian alcohol called cachaca, mixed with lime, sugar and crushed ice. They are very tasty, man, but watch out – too many is dangerous.
Do you think this relaxed vibe is why people want Brazil to win the World Cup?
Maybe. Everywhere I go, people love Brazilians. When I go on holiday in Europe and hotels see my Brazil passport, I often get free food and drinks. It’s like I’m a movie star.
Or do you think it’s because you guys play such beautiful football?
We do play beautiful football. It’s not enough to win – and Brazil is 100% gonna win the World Cup – it’s important to play great too. Brazilians love everything to be beautiful.
There are a lot of good teams. Why are you so confident about winning?
We already won five World Cups, man. In Brazil, we don’t even call it the World Cup – we talk about “hexa” which means number six. We have the best players and the most skills.
Who is your favourite player in the Brazil team?
I love Casemiro, who plays in the midfield. We obviously have Neymar in attack, too, but this team is strong all over the pitch and they have experience. That’s the big difference.
Some Otto drivers support more than one country because of their backgrounds. Do you?
My mum is from Portugal and my granddad was born in Italy, so I have three passports. I’m 99% for Brazil but I like Portugal to do well too. Obviously, Italy is not there this time.
Some drivers say they like all African teams to win. What about South American teams?
Are you joking? No way, man. This is cultural – nobody from Brazil wants Argentina or Uruguay to win. Even the players don’t like each other. Brazil is number one. That’s it.
Well good luck to you – and Brazil. Where do you go to watch the matches?
I see them at home with my 16-year-old daughter. She cries with happiness when Brazil scores a goal. I hope all the Otto drivers enjoy the games as much as she does. It’s fun.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Yes. I want to say thank you to Otto for everything. Seriously, whenever I need help, you guys have looked after me. Even doing this today – it feels like we are all the same family.
